11 am Sunday 26th February 2012 TIMINGS 09:00 – Front gate & registration opens 10:40 – Registration closes 11:00 – Race starts (promptly) LOCATION Wasing Park, Aldermaston, Nr Reading, Berkshire, RG7 4NG View map showing the location of Wasing DIRECTIONS Entry to the Wasing Estate is via the Shalford Lodge Entrance. Download a map and directions here. The Shalford Lodge gate will be unlocked at 9 am. Please do not arrive before 9 am as you won’t be able to get in. From 9 am the gate should be permanently open but if it isn’t, approach slowly and stop at the sign and the gate will begin to open automatically. Once through the gate make your way SLOWLY up the tarmac single lane drive. There are a number of speed bumps along the drive, one of which is quite severe so do watch your speed. Please use the passing places to let any vehicles coming in the opposite direction past. DO NOT drive on the grass or pull over onto the grassy verge – vehicles must remain on the tarmac at all times. At the crossroads, at the top of the drive, follow the event signage and marshals directions to the car parking area. CAR PARKING Car parking will not be all in one big open area but rather on hard standing in a number of different places, in and around various farm buildings. Space is limited so please share lifts if you can. Follow marshals directions on where to park. Do not block any access routes, even those through the farm – these must be kept clear at all times. ARRIVAL INFORMATION On arrival you will need to collect your race number from registration. The car parking area is approximately 1 km from the start/registration area (view on a map here), so once you’ve parked you will probably want to take everything that you need with you. Please allow enough time to get to registration before it closes. There is no shelter at the start/registration area so please bring appropriate waterproof tops and bottoms as well as several warm layers in case of inclement weather. If the weather is really bad, registration may be moved closer to the car parking area so those arriving early can shelter in their vehicles before the race. Marshals will inform you when you arrive if this is the case. This is highly unlikely though and will only be done in exceptional circumstances so please make sure you bring adequate clothing and protection. REGISTRATION Registration will be open from 9:00 am until 10:40 am. Follow the event signage and marshals directions from the car park to start/registration area. At registration, please tell the marshal your name and you will be given your race number. The marshal will give you one tyvek running number for you to wear on your chest and four safety pins. Pin the tyvek number to the front of the outermost top that you’ll wear during the race. Your race number must be clearly visible from the FRONT at all times during the race. ENTRY LIST & AMENDMENTS A list of entrants is now available for viewing online. This was last updated on Sunday 19 February so if you entered after this you won't be on the list. Read more here. If any of your entry details have changed or if you wish to change which course you are doing, please inform the marshal at registration - there is no need to contact us in advance. BAGGAGE There will be a baggage drop facility at the start/registration area which you may use at your own risk. If you wish to deposit a bag, collect a baggage tag from registration, write your race number on the tag and fasten it to your bag. Then hand your bag to the marshal at the baggage drop off point. Please note only one bag from each competitor will be accepted. TOILETS Portaloos and urinals will be located in the start / registration area. In order to help minimise queues, please make sure you use these facilities well before the start of the race and do not leave going until the last minute. There is to be no alfresco urinating anywhere in Wasing Park. Anyone caught doing so will be liable for any cleaning or decontamination costs. THE COURSE The Wasing Estate is an active, working estate. Residents (which include the Estate Manager) live on the Estate. There are farmers and other people who work on the Estate. And the Estate is used by others for recreation (e.g. fishing). So it is likely you will encounter other Estate users. While on the course please be considerate to other Estate users and keep to the side of tracks to let vehicles past. The course is in a designated SSSI area (Site of Special Scientific Interest). We have been given permission to use the agreed tracks and trails only. Under no circumstance should you deviate from the marked course or drop any litter while out on the course. All drinks containers and food wrappers must be carried back to the start / finish with you. You should generally observe the Countryside Code. A minor infringement will incur a time penalty of up to five minutes while a severe or repeated infringement will result in disqualification.
Both the run and the bike loop (for Duathlon participants) start by following the same main track through the wood for about 2 km. Generally, runners should stay on the right hand side of the track and Mt Bikers should stick to the left hand side. The competitor in front (irrespective of whether they are running or Mt biking) has priority. When overtaking a competitor you must always give way to them. Some tracks on the Wasing Estate are also public footpaths / permissive bridleways. The course crosses these rights of way, and follows them for short sections. So please look out for other members of the public who may be using these routes and be considerate to them. Short Trail Run: Approximate distance: 6 km run After a short run from the start to join up with the run loop at the water station, the short Trail Run course consists of 1 lap of the run loop. See a map of the course here. Long Trail Run: Approximate distance: 12 km run After a short run from the start to join up with the run loop at the water station, the long Trail Run course consists of 2 laps of the run loop. See a map of the course here. Find out about the course conditions here. WATER You are advised to fill up your drinks bottles at home as water on site is not easily accessible and therefore won’t be readily available before the start. During the race, there will be a water station approximately 500 m into the run loop (see course map). Water won’t be available on your first visit (because it will be only about 500 m after the start), but water will be available for those doing the long Trail Run on their second lap. There will also be water at the finish for all participants. SAFETY There will be professional medical cover on site for the duration of the race. If you need medical attention and are able to, you should make your way along the course to a marshal or back to the start / finish area. If you are not able to do this, you should alert another competitor and get them to inform the next marshal. If you drop out it is VERY IMPORTANT that you report to the finish before you leave the Estate. If you don’t do this, we will assume you are still out on the course and will implement the necessary search and rescue procedures which are both costly and time consuming. AT THE FINISH When you finish please keep moving along the funnel towards the marshal. Do not overtake or allow anyone to overtake you in the funnel once you’ve crossed the finish line i.e. underneath the finish arch. The marshal will note down your race number. Please don't ask the marshal what your position is as they won't be able to tell you. Each competitor will then be given a finishers medal. WINNERS TROPHIES Trophies will be awarded to the following: 1st Place Long Duathlon Trophies will be presented to the winning individuals shortly after they finish. The decision on how many trophies to award is based upon the number of entries received four weeks before race day (i.e. the deadline for ordering the trophies). REFRESHMENTS Hot Stuff Catering will be offering a wide variety of pre and post-race refreshments at the event. Do bring some cash with you so you can enjoy some hot food and drink after the race. Prices start from just 50p for a tea or coffee. Read more and see the menu here. SPECTATORS Spectators are welcome at the start / finish area but they must not enter the bike transition area or obstruct the course. Spectators are not allowed to wander around the course or the Estate. When walking to and from the car park, spectators must keep out of the way of competitors by sticking to the side of the tracks. NO ANIMALS No dogs, pets or any other animals must be brought onto the Wasing Estate. Sorry but our licence to hold this event at Wasing does not permit animals on the site. RESULTS Finishing positions will be put up on the QX website as soon as possible after the race. All things going well, these should be online within 24 hrs (i.e. on Monday). It'll take a little longer to sort out all the splits and finishing times but these will follow shortly afterwards - just as soon as they've all been processed and verified. RACE PHOTOS Photos of particpants taken during the race will be added to the race photos page after the full results have been published. Keep an eye on the QX website noticeboard for further details. AFTER THE RACE When you’ve finished, don’t forget to collect all your bag from the baggage drop off point. Please assist the marshal by ensuring your race number is clearly visible when you go to collect your bag. When you return to the car park please make sure you do not get in the way of any competitors still out on the course. Stick to the side of the tracks and give way at junctions and crossings. Exit Wasing Estate the same way as you came in – back down along the tarmac drive. Be aware of the severe speed bump and don’t drive on the grass. Approach the gate at the end of the drive slowly and stop at the sign. The gate should open automatically.
